I discovered a great movie on YouTube by Susan Ireland, author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Perfect RESUME. In this movie scene, Susan discusses why you need an objective on the major of your CV. I agree that it’s important for you to have a valuable one (see my post 7 Tips For a Great RESUME). There are several reasons:
1. It lets the reader know what you want, instead of implying that you need help finding a spot. It’s a weak approach that won’t serve you well anywhere in the process, including salary talks.
2. It tells the reader which department head needs to have your RESUME, so that it gets to the appropriate place. (Are you interested in laboratory revenue, clinical diagnostics revenue, lab revenue, imaging sales, biotech sales, cellular/molecular products sales, hospital equipment sales, medical equipment revenue, surgical supply revenue, pharmaceutical device sales, or pharmaceutical sales?)
3. It tells the reader what level of responsibility you’d like to hold in your next position.
4. It tells the reader how to interpret the rest of your information. It’s the supporting piece for your marketing document.

Thanks, Susan!

If you are a sales professional or want to become one, or if you are looking for a new sales job, you will face one of the toughest interview processes of any job seeker.
